Overview

Sally Field is one of our greatest living actresses, and has two Oscars as proof. She remains youthfully energetic even at 69, and her pitch-perfect comic timing is on wonderful display in Hello, My Name Is Doris, a very funny and gentle R-rated comedy about a would-be May-December romance between a sixtysomething spinster and a hunky colleague. Doris Miller (Field) immediately becomes smitten with new and much younger co-worker John Fremont (the easygoing Max Greenfield) when the two are packed into a cramped Manhattan elevator and he thoughtfully adjusts her "cool" cat-eye glasses. This brief and innocent act of kindness sends her heart aflutter and awakens long-dormant feelings of sexual desire within her. Doris starts daydreaming about John -- which yields some of the movie's most hilarious moments -- and invents situations to grab his attention. With the help of a friend's 13-year-old granddaughter, she even stalks him on Facebook. Soon, she leaves behind her AARP world and immerses herself in John's hipster universe, where she is mistakenly viewed by his pals as plainspoken and refreshingly retro (it helps that her fashion sense is full of colorful, eccentric sweaters and scarves). Of course, John doesn't have a clue that she's in love with him. Everything is going great, at least from Doris' flighty point-of-view, until she spies John kissing a gorgeous blonde (Beth Behrs); while this crushes her, it also makes her even more determined to win him over. Hello, My Name Is Doris is a perfect showcase for Field's enormous talent. Her Doris is by turns disarmingly winsome and touchingly tragic: We learn that she gave up her one chance at true love in her youth to care for her abandoned mother, whom she has now, unfortunately, evolved into -- a lonely, pack-rat cat lady. Against all odds, Field makes us root for Doris' impossible quest to find forbidden love, even though it's likely doomed to failure. Part of Field's appeal, at least for moviegoers of a certain age, is her stellar resume, from her innocent days on The Flying Nun to her carefree time as a passenger racing around with Burt Reynolds in the popular Smokey and the Bandit series, from her more mature and Oscar-winning roles in Norma Rae and Places in the Heart to her great stint as a widowed matriarch on the TV series Brothers & Sisters. She always delivers, which makes it especially disappointing that the film falters near the end when it casts Doris in a lesser light for failing to be honest and correct a painful wrong she created. It's a most unfortunate omission. Although Field is the standout here, she gets superb support from Tyne Daly as her no-nonsense BFF and Stephen Root as her self-centered but caring brother. The script, co-written by director Michael Showalter and Laura Terruso (and based on the latter's 2011 short film Doris & the Intern), is unruly and unbelievable at times, but thankfully, they have Field to elevate even the subpar moments. Her dotty Doris will have you at hello.
