Created in the style of 2007's Dog, this compact photographic book showcases as many varieties of cats as it does interactive components. Tabs enable playful motion: on the cover, a gray cat dips his paw into a fish bowl; inside, a Bengal swats at a ball of yarn and a "swishing slinky cat tail" twitches. Other cats are pictured next to descriptive titles: a fluffy "aristocat" sits on a tuffet while a "nice cat" dozes next to a parrot. A "scraggly cat" features a furry cutout, while a hairless, "scary cat" (a Sphynx) lives up to its moniker. The final panels offer portraits of the cast of characters, with their names and breeds. The lively diversity of felines makes this as appropriate on a coffee table as in a playroom. Ages 2-up. (Feb.)

This amusing book for young children, as with many of Mr. Van Fleet's other books, is recognizable by the thickness of its pages, its white cover, and its title printed in large black letters. All of the illustrations are photographs of real cats, and they are identified by their names on the final pages. There are thirty different breeds, and they are identified by their call names and breeds on the last page. There is Star, an Oriental and Starglow, a Toyger, Mimi, a Persian and Jordon with her two kittens, Almond Joy and Kit Kat who are American Curls. Solo is a Burmese and Nappi is a Domestic Shorthair with white, black and brown stripes and a white napkin under her chin. The front cover displays three cats, a hefty orange one, a slimmer two-tone brown one with large blue eyes, and a soft grey cat with yellow eyes behind a goldfish bowl with her paw in it. A substantial push tab (and you know it is a push tab because of the large arrow pointed into the book) moves the paw down and the fish out of the way. The cats on the seven large double-page spreads are introduced with a sort of rhyming flow. On the first page, there is "Cool cat, Copycat, Striped cat, Spots. Cat with a ball of yarn—swat, swat, swat!" Followed on the second page with "Furry cat, Bald cat, Wrinkly cat, Sleek. Cats love toys that squeak, squeak, squeak!" On that page there is a small, round cushion to push that will squeak. Some of the cats appear more than once in the book. I will not tell you what other kind of creatures appear, but you will be delighted to see them. A very young child will want to share looking at this book many times. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich

Van Fleet follows up the popular Tails (Harcourt, 2003) and Dog (S & S, 2007) with this interactive novelty book aimed at toddlers but photographed for cat lovers. Stanton has captured an impressive array of expressions on his subjects: a cheeky Himalayan sticking out its tongue, a regally bored Bengal, a gentle Kurilian Bobtail asleep beside a parrot. The text consists of simple rhymes designed to describe different types of cats and what they do. Sue Stainton's I Love Cats (Harper Collins, 2007) and Patricia Hubbell's I Like Cats (North-South, 2003) are just a couple of similar titles that come to mind. The inclusion of furry tails to pat, flaps to lift, and tabs to pull is designed to engage young readers, although it will probably just lead to damaged books. The photographs are engaging enough and should continue to hold attention after the novelty wears off. Buy where the other Van Fleet titles are popular.-Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA
