One of eight early readers in the “What’s on My Plate” series, this edition focuses on sugars and fats in a person’s diet. Using the USDA’s “My Plate” as a guide, oversized text focuses on explaining that added sugar in the diet provides no nutrients and emphasizes selecting foods without added sugars (although no mention is made of corn syrup). In addition, the five short chapters include discouraging ingesting “solid” fats although it does not explain what solid fats are. The large color photos are mostly of young children eating some kind of sweet with only one or two showing healthy snacks. It is puzzling why emphasis continues to be placed on sweets as “treats” perpetuating the idea that they are something special rather than empty calories and a detriment to good health. A table at the end of the book does emphasize healthy alternatives to the usual snack foods. A glossary, index, and sources for further information are included. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.; Ages 6 to 8.
