Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller und Autor bis heute populärer Werke wie der "Schachnovelle", "Ungeduld des Herzens" oder "Sternstunden der Menschheit". Daneben verfasste Zweig Biografien über u.a. Maria Stuart, Erasmus von Rotterdam, Marie Antoinett Emile Verhaeren oder Honoré de Balzac. Stefan Zweig war über die Folgen des Krieges und der Gewaltherrschaft derart erschüttert, dass er sich gemeinsam mit seiner Frau das Leben nahm in seinem selbstgewählten Exil Petrópolis bei Rio de Janeiro (Brasilien).
