This book is meant to calm the fears of young children who visit the doctor for a routine examination or a broken bone. The children shown in the photographs are quite young, three and four-year-olds, but the vocabulary of the text is aimed at children quite a bit older. The table of contents is a list of catchy titles for the different experiences a child will encounter. Each of these has a double-page spread that includes a section entitled "Your Job," which includes advice about holding still, counting to three, holding someone's hand and bringing a toy. Another part explains the instrument used in that part of the procedure, and explains what hurts and what does not. The text for children is followed by "points for parents," including a very good list of suggestions for before and after the visit. There is an index and difficult words are defined in the course of the text. Most instruments are given their technical name, with the notable exception of the blood pressure cuff, which is called a "hug machine."
