India is home to many cultures and languages. With more than a billion inhabitants, its population is the second largest in the world. Following independence from colonial rule under Great Britain in 1947 and the separation of India into largely Muslim Pakistan and largely Hindu India, some Indians began to seek opportunities for better jobs elsewhere, including immigrating to the United States. The book examines traditional customs of Indians and what immigrants have brought with them to the United States, including their foods, celebrations, and traditional dress. It also describes the process by which immigrants become U.S. citizens and highlights famous Indian Americans. A short glossary, pronunciation guide, index, map and color photograph are included. Other books in the "One Nation" series include Cuban Americans and Somali Americans. At a time when millions of immigrants and their descendants live in the U.S. and in the aftermath of September 11, understanding the diverse cultures that make up our country today has never been more important. This series attempts to begin highlighting those efforts to young audiences. 2004, Abdo Publishing Co, Ages 8 to 12.
