About the Author

Chris Haughton is the creator of Little Owl Lost and Oh No, George! He has taught many courses in design and illustration around the world. In 2007, he was named one of Time Magazine’s DESIGN 100 for his work for Fair Trade and People Tree, and in 2011 he was named one of Booktrust’s Best New Illustrators. Originally from Dublin, Chris Haughton now lives in London.

Join four friends as they try to catch a bird they spotted up in a tree! The four friends are dressed in all black and attempt to be stealthy in the woods to catch the bird. The littlest friend tries to talk to the bird but his three bigger friends tell him “Shh!” because they have a plan. They begin by tiptoeing slowly, counting to three, and then pouncing on the bird with nets. Unfortunately for the three friends, the bird flies away. Next, they try to climb the tree slowly, count to three, and pounce, but the bird flies down the hill. The three friends try other variations until they notice the other littlest friend offers the bird food and a whole flock of birds appear! This scares the three friends away and the fourth is taken along. The last page of the book shows the three friends noticing a squirrel. Wonder what they will try next to catch the squirrel? The text is simple, with a focus on the illustrations. The colors of the friends’ dark clothes matches with the darkness of the trees and plants in the forest but contrasts with the bright red, orange, and purple colors of the bird. The illustrations are playful and engaging. A great book to use with preschool-aged children! Reviewer: Kristen Bowman; Ages 2 to 5.

Three hunters with nets trudge through a deep forest of violets and blues, their wide eyes unblinking in the gloom. They’re comically small and troll-like, and they’re trailed by a fourth companion who’s even stumpier. The hunters spot an exquisite scarlet bird. “Hello, birdie,” says the smallest hunter, prompting hushes from his companions, who tell him, “We have a plan.” The three hunters tiptoe forward, nets ready, but fall over each other like the Keystone Kops when they pounce. The bird sails off, undisturbed, and the pattern of greeting, hushing, and pouncing repeats with equally slapstick results. Big, blocky shapes and intense hues make the action simple to follow, and Haughton’s (Oh No, George!) text is similarly telegraphic. Eventually, the bird flies toward the littlest hunter after being offered a bit of bread, a flock of phantasmagorically colored birds gathers, and the hunters get their comeuppance. The delicious stupidity of the hunting trio, the purity of heart of their small companion, and the sweet-tempered drama of each page turn make this a classic exercise in picture-book making. Three long-faced, round-eyed hunters shrouded in black and carrying nets are going through the dark forest, followed by a wide-eyed youngster. One spots and points out a bright pink bird, standing out in the darkness. “Hello, birdie,” waves the little one. “SHH! We have a plan,” announces the leader. But their careful tip-toeing and counting only makes the bird fly away. Twice more they spot and try to creep up or climb up to catch the bird, in vain. Finally, the youngster offers the bird some bread. Soon a whole flock of brightly colored birds surround him. When the hunters try to catch them, the birds chase them away. The hunters trudge back across a dark wordless page. When they spot a squirrel, it’s “SHH! We have a plan,” again, as the little one scratches his head. The strongly designed illustrations, created digitally, are in flat colors, with the stylized, brightly colored birds in contrast to the shades of black and blue used for the rest of the scenes, all set in white frames. Suddenly, they spy a bright pink bird in the tree. "Hello, birdie," calls the little one. "Shh," reprimands the first one. "SHH!" hisses the next. "We have a plan," explains the third, holding up a birdcage. They tiptoe towards the bird with hilariously expressive body language until, "ready one…ready two…ready three…GO!" But the bird easily evades them, and the three end up in a tangle while the little one looks on. The scenario and "shhs" repeat, and finally, while the big ones are literally down the creek without a paddle, the little one makes friends. In a breathtakingly rich spread, a flock of colorful, jewel-toned birds appear and drive the schemers into retreat. Echoing the opening, the big ones quick-step along under the moonlit sky, nervously glancing behind them and dragging the little one along. The story seems over, but they haven't quite learned their lesson yet. A masterful delight, this crafty caper has huge kid appeal and a title/refrain that will easily sneak into the family lexicon: shh! We have a plan. This perfect blend of circular narrative, deceptively spare art, and humor becomes a story that kids will want to read at storytime, at home, and to themselves if no adult is handy.
