Stephen Savage is the illustrator of the New York Times-bestselling picture book Polar Bear Night, also named a New York Times Best Illustrated children's book. He is also the creator of Little Tug, which School Library Journal called "petite but powerful." He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter.

In a city “full of brave trucks,” writes Savage (Little Tug), the green bucket truck, red fire truck, and blue tow truck spend their days rescuing this and fixing that, all with can-do smiles. But the nebbishy, bespectacled garbage truck? He’s not only colorless, “He just collects the trash.” Of course, Clark Kent flew under the radar, too—and, sure enough, when a blizzard hits, that very same garbage truck emerges from his garage as the snow-plowing Supertruck. He “digs out the whole city” (as well as his snazzier counterparts), only to disappear without waiting for thanks: “The next morning, the trucks wonder about the mighty truck who saved them. Where could he be?” Savage’s take on the superhero myth is terrific: there’s no bullying or teasing of the garbage truck, which makes his Supertruck transformation a triumph pure and simple. The garbage truck may not seem like much when compared to the fire trucks, tow trucks, and bucket trucks that work in the city. After all, they put out fires, rescue buses, and fix power lines. All the garbage does is collect trash—or so it seems. In fact, “garbage truck” is the everyday “Clark Kent” all of the other trucks rely on come snowfall: the snowplow known as “Supertruck!” The crisp lines and sharp details of Steven Savage’s illustrations draw readers’ attention and accentuate the transformation from the muted and bespectacled “alter ego” to the vibrantly hued red-and-blue “hero” identity. An accompanying CD includes three tracks. The first two are read-along versions of the story narrated by George Newbern, whose reading of it is reminiscent of a newscaster or documentarian presenting an overview of the city’s vehicles. One of the tracks has page-turn tones, while the other does not. The third track is author Steven Savage, reflecting on his childhood, growing into the career of picture book author and illustrator, and inspiration. Savage’s remarks about how Supertruck came to be will be especially interesting to young artists and storytellers. There are all sorts of trucks in this city, including trucks that are brave, such as a tow truck, a fire truck, and a bucket truck that fixes a power line. Then there is a garbage truck. But when it starts snowing and there is a terrible blizzard, the garbage truck ass a sweeper attached in front and becomes Supertruck. He digs out the whole city and becomes an unknown hero. The next day the other trucks wonder what truck did it all. Meanwhile, Supertruck goes back to collecting trash. The very brief text and large illustrations make this a good book for adults to read to young children. The simple story, with its little heroic adventure and uncomplicated yet colorful illustrations, is just right for preschoolers.
