There are many informational books about menstruation, but this one stands out from the rest. O'Grady and Wansbrough regard menstruation as "magical" and recount different cultures' taboos and celebrations regarding the process. Ancient Romans believed menstrual blood could cure disease, while the Mae Enga of New Guinea used the blood as poison. The authors suggest traditions and celebrations for modern women: wear red on the first day of your period; compare your menstrual cycles to the moon; give special gifts to girls at the onset of menarche. More than a compilation of cultural and anatomical information, this work contains twenty anecdotal stories about menstruation. Told with warmth and honesty, these stories make up the body of the book. We meet a hopeful ten-year-old who is disappointed to discover that the red stains on her pants are from elderberries, not blood. We share the surprise and mortification of a hospital patient's first period while in a body cast. We laugh at the antics of a brave seventh grader's battle with her locker (which has her pads) and smile at a father's compassion and frantic shopping trip when he helps his daughter during her first period. Interspersed throughout the stories are gray boxes containing information about many topics, such as tampons and toxic shock syndrome, breast examinations, pelvic exams, and cystitis. The glossary at the end of the book is helpful as is the list of suggested reading. The combination of anecdotes and factual information is unique and informative.
