The ancient Roman city of Luna which was founded in 177 BC was famed for its port from which the marbles quarried in the Apuan Alps were delivered. The Roman harbour of Luni was also mentioned by the Greek geographer Strabo who lived in Italy around the 1st century. However, the exact location of this harbour is unknown. No reliable evidence of harbour structures has ever been found. During two field campaigns in 2010 and 2011, 17 drillings were carried out in the Luni Plain which faces the northern Tyrrhenian Sea. The primary aim of these firstly sedimentological field investigations was to reconstruct the palaeo-environment and landscape features focused on Roman Times by using geoarchaeological methods. This palaeogeographic reconstruction was useful to constrain or identify the harbour location. For new evidence was found for the harbour's location.
