If you have ever had young children ask about the origin of food in a market, here is a book to help answer their questions. Annie is an apple farmer and lives in her apple orchard. After picking and sorting her apples in autumn, Annie processes apples into cider, sauce, muffins, cakes and pies. The best apples are set aside to be sold fresh. Annie loads her truck and drives to a farmers' market in the city. After selling every item, she returns home feeling content that she owns her own farm. The book's main text is in Spanish and is a translation of the original English text, which is in smaller type and placed below it. The translation is simple and spare, mirroring the English perfectly. Each page of text is framed with bold illustrations accompanied by a drawing of Annie in action. Some of the frames have words that are only in English, such as "apple sauce" and "cider." Translations of these words are included in the book's final pages along with recipes for apple sweetbread and apple sauce, which appear only in Spanish. The same simplicity that makes the book appealing for younger children also makes it rather one-dimensional. Annie is somehow able to do all the work that a viable apple farm requires without any help. However, as Annie harvests in the fall, sorts her apples, and follows recipes, the book provides a fun way to teach math and science within the classroom. 2004, Dutton Children's Books, Ages 5 to 7.

PreS-Gr 2-This simple story of an apple farmer has been translated into unadorned Spanish. From the harvest, through the processes involved in making cider, applesauce, and pastries, which she sells along with "las [manzanas] m s hermosas" at a farmer's market, Ana's round of continual work is represented as vocational and deeply satisfying. The translation is simple and loses some of the adjectival embellishment of the original, but is true in sensibility. The large-type Spanish text is on top of each verso with a smaller font, English translation on the bottom. The facing illustrations are clean and bright cartoons, with the shapes outlined in black or red. They have a busy, primitive charm, a cross between the work of Lois Lenski and Grandma Moses. Words in the illustrations have been left in English, but they are translated on an appended page. Two Spanish-language recipes, one for applesauce and one for apple muffins, are included. Use this title with Pat Hutchins's Ten Red Apples (Greenwillow, 2000) for a primary look at apples and apple farming. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
