Deering and Lentz compose a veritable love letter to the sandwich, including recipes for (and tidbits about) more than 50 examples, from basic bologna to tuna melts, reubens, and cheesesteaks. Lentz works in a brash, comic-book style: sauces and cheese ooze from the completed sandwiches on left-hand pages, while exploded versions of each sandwich showcase the individual layers and components. Deering’s descriptions are enthusiastic but also repetitive and short on substance (“Fried chicken is the ultimate comfort food”; “There’s no better comfort food than bread and cheese”), resulting in a book that looks great but isn’t very filling. Kids as young as three can probably assemble an edible sandwich, but this book is written for the “sandwich savant,” as the author puts it—or at least for someone who wants to know a whole lot about sandwich history and creation! On the contents page, young cooks are presented with 56 illustrated and clearly labeled sandwich choices. Everything’s here, from the dependable PB & J and Grilled Cheese, to the ever-popular Cheesesteak or BLT, as well as regional sandwiches kids may have never heard of like the Po’Boy or Banh Mi, and sweet sandwiches, such as the S’More and the Apple Pie. But there is a lot more here than recipes: this book is packed with all manner of facts and statistics, and entire pages are devoted to food history and fascinating narratives about sandwich and ingredient origins. Each sandwich is given a two-page spread, with one highlighting its backstory, and the other instructing young cooks on how to assemble. Variations for just about every ingredient are proposed (and pictured), and “Try It With” suggestions are practical and popular (Side Salad and Cola with your Pizza Melt?). The tone throughout is encouraging and joyful. The illustrations are colorful, clever, and make steps readable at a glance and super-easy to follow. “We Dare You!” pages encourage kids to think out of the box about sandwich construction. (Who would dare to add a fried egg, cheese puffs, or bologna to a PB & J sandwich?) The text is organized by difficulty, beginning with Level 1: Plate & Knife recipes and moving on to sandwiches that require more heat and assembly, concluding with Level 5: The Big Time, where extra cooking and prep is required. Gr 4 Up—A tasty offering with more than 50 recipes covering five skill levels—there's something here for everyone. The book spices up basic staples like PB&J and grilled cheese by adding historical facts in special "Between the Bread" sections, as well as challenges to experiment called "We Dare You" (mayonnaise plus peanut butter and a fried egg!). Some of the more advanced sandwiches (including a Shrimp Po'Boy and Apple Pie) involve special tools that Deering and Lentz take care to explain and illustrate. No matter the difficulty level, instructions are clear and easy to understand. Lentz (illustrator of the board book series "Book-O-Hats") has adeptly created sharp, appealing, and clever illustrations: sandwiches are deconstructed in midair to help inspiring chefs visualize each layer. The book also includes an array of vegetarian options and allergy-friendly substitutions. VERDICT With a fun and visually fascinating approach, this collection is everything that a young people's cookbook should be.
