About the Author

Dorothy Hayden Truscott (1925-2006) was the top-ranked woman in bridge for many years. She learned bridge at the age of seven, kibitzing with her parents. Her tournament career began in 1958 and included four world titles and 28 national titles. She was second in the Bermuda Bowl, and won the Life Master Pairs and the Blue Ribbon Pairs. She was a World Bridge Federation Grandmaster, and was inducted into the American Contract Bridge League's Hall of fame in 1998. Mrs. Truscott wrote two bridge books which became classics: WINNING DECLARER PLAY and BID BETTER, PLAY BETTER. Among her contributions to bridge theory are splinter bids and DOP1. She was married to Alan Truscott, who was bridge editor of the New York Times, and also co-authored two bridge books with him.
