Children's Literature - Leona Illig

Part of the "Life's Challenges" series, this book takes an honest look at how kids feel when their parents divorce. Although the Mom, Dad, and children are all drawn as foxes, their emotions and reactions are as real as any human's. The book deals with some of the more unpleasant side effects of divorce, such as when children blame themselves for their parents' divorce, when kids have to go to court during legal proceedings, and when kids end up living in two different homes. It also provides some help and wisdom for those going through a family divorce; e.g., that everyone needs to acknowledge their true feelings; that no feeling is right or wrong; and that being in a support group can help kids understand that other children are in similar situations. The illustrations, which are done in rich colors, complement the seriousness of the subject. The colors are also soothing, which is a plus in dealing with a subject with so much emotion attached to it. Throughout the book are sidebars with information about how some children react when their parents divorce, and at the end of the book is a section on additional reading, Internet sites, and a glossary. This book is written for and about young readers, and it should resonate with them. In the end, one of its most honest statements is probably its best: that no matter what happens to a kid, being a kid is their only job.
