There is something in a LEGO model that is beautiful to boys and girls of all ages. Glaasker and Bosman understand that implicitly, and their coffee-table book The Art Of LEGO Scale Modeling capitalizes on the magic of LEGO’s appeal. Inside the oversized book is a generous helping of beautifully photographed models by various LEGO designers that will beg the question, “How did they do that?” Unfortunately, while the final chapter gives general advice on that subject, the one shortcoming of the book is that the reader will end up knowing little more about the process of creating such models. Nonetheless, if the purpose of a coffee-table book is to provide eye candy and start conversations, Glaasker and Bosman’s book will do just that, and LEGO aficionados will not be disappointed. From the first page, the photographs command close attention, for the works themselves are masterpieces. In most cases, it would be hard to distinguish the model from an actual version of the represented artifact—cars, trucks, trains, machines, and the like.
