An elderly man named Tom Nickerson (Martin Sheen) recounts the story of his time spent as a cabin boy on a whaling ship in 1819. After a severe food shortage on the whaler, the crew captures a whale which buoys the spirits of the crew. However, a few months later another whale attacks and sinks the ship, leaving the men at the mercy of the sea.
