3 Sequels We’ve Been Waiting Way Too Long For
Anyone who’s ever been to a Harry Potter midnight release party—or who took August 24, 2010, off work to binge-read Mockingjay, or bombed their Facebook feed with Allegiant spoilers last October—knows the exquisite torture of waiting for the next book in a series to drop. After pre-ordering the book and rereading its predecessors, the desperate reader may turn to fanfiction, or to stalking the book’s author on Twitter hoping for a plot hint or cover reveal (or they’ll go even further: George R. R. Martin’s fans have been known to straight up abuse their author for daring to do anything but write the next installment of A Song of Ice and Fire).
But in most cases, the day finally arrives, the book comes out, and the fangirling commences. Keep hope alive: here are 3 recent series releases that have made certain eager readers very, very happy (warning: mild spoilers ahead—but none relating to the new titles):
Hollow City, by Ransom Riggs
When last we saw Miss Peregine’s intrepid, eternally youthful crew, they were on the move, leaving the school that had lent them supernatural shelter for so many years. Riggs’ blend of fast-paced, supernatural mystery and mind-bending vintage photographs made his debut novel a runaway success, and now his peculiar children, led by Jacob, an outsider with an unexpected link to Miss Peregrine’s charges, are heading to London. Expect more eerie photographs and the same eccentric magical milieu, transposed onto the clashing old-and-new landscape of modern-day London.
Cress, by Marissa Meyer
The third in Meyer’s addictive Lunar Chronicles, which offer a sci-fi feminist update on classic fairy tales, this release centers on a Rapunzel-inspired hacker named Cress, whose constricting tower is reimagined as a web-equipped satellite she’s been trapped in since childhood. Cress must join forces with mechanical genius (and cyborg) Cinder (Cinderella) and Scarlet (Red Riding Hood) to save their world from its tyrannical lunar queen.
Ignite Me, by Tahereh Mafi
The third and final installment of Mafi’s Shatter Me trilogy finds teen protagonist Juliette, a former asylum inmate cursed with a literally deadly touch, rising to the top of the rebel ranks that are working to dismantle their dystopian society. Oh, and there’s a loooove triangle.
