10 Amazing Picture Books About Whales
As a landlocked child growing up in Colorado, whales captivated me. They were mythical creatures living in far away waters, with infrequent sightings and the occasional unlucky beached whale. When I had the chance to witness a pod of whales swimming a couple years ago, it was even more astonishing than the images I had conjured in my childhood imagination, and I can absolutely see why kids love to read about these majestic creatures. Here are eight picture books perfect for a whale of a good storytime.

The Boy and the Whale, by Mordicai Gerstein
Inspired by a video he saw of a real-life whale rescue, Caldecott Medal-winner Mordicai Gerstein crafted this tale of a boy who works with his father catching fish for a living. One day they find an injured whale entangled in their fishing net. While the boy’s father laments the loss of the net, and tells his son it’s too difficult and dangerous to free the whale, the boy has other ideas. He sneaks back out to the ocean and dives to cut the whale free, prompting the whale to deliver a joyful freedom celebration.
