It’s the beginning of a new year, if one of you (or your kids’) resolutions was to add fun and interesting books to their shelves, it’s the perfect time to introduce them to a new chapter book series. If your kids love action books and can’t get enough of LEGOs, then the popular LEGO Ninjago Chapter Book series is the perfect combination of the two. My eight-year-old and I recently read both Breakout (Ninjago Book #8) as well as the newly released The New Ninja (Book #9), and he is now a definite fan. These super-lively, adventure-filled chapter books are great for reluctant readers, and LEGO fans who like a good fast-paced adventure will love using books to explore the world of Ninjago.
Following the ninja team of Kai (Master of Fire), Zane (Master of Ice), Cole (Master of Earth), Jay (Master of Lightening), and Lloyd (the Green Ninja), The New Ninja introduces Nya as the now full-fledged Master of Water. Nya is eager to help her fellow ninja, and she jumps at any opportunity to use her new power. And since everyone knows that water is the only thing that can defeat ghosts, she turns out to be extra important against the haunts that have taken over the town of Stiix, wreaking havoc on everything they encounter. But can she do it all alone? Or does she need to work as a team with the other ninjas?

As a parent, what I love about the books is that they always include a good lesson about teamwork, while also celebrating individual talents. And they are fun! Who wouldn’t love to read about breaking out of an underground noodle factory in Breakout (and without the elemental powers the ninjas normally possess ,as they have been stolen during the Tournament of Elements? Karlof (Master of Metal), Dareth (who calls himself the Brown Ninja), Ash (Master of Smoke), Gravis (Master of Gravity), Bolobo (Master of Nature), Chamille (Master of Form), and Tox (Master of Poison) also make an appearance in book 8. Together, they must figure out how to escape from their noodle-y prison. Teamwork was never so tasty.
The highly imaginative storylines and action-packed chapters will keep your kids coming back for more, excited to see what will happen next. Plus, each page has a couple of words that are playfully larger, bolder, and turned in different directions than the others, keeping things entertaining as you read. The enemies the Ninjago team faces include all manner of evil: Master Chen, ghosts, Nindroids, skeleton warriors, big snakes, and more! Ever optimistic, the ninjas continue to prevail through teamwork and training, getting out of sticky situations at every turn. And each book can be read and enjoyed on its own, or you can pick up the whole series. Either way, you and your kids will soon be on your way to reading fun.
