Gifts for Every Vinyl Fan on Your List

Vinyl is back in a big way, but for many audiophiles, it never went away at all. While some people are content to listen to their music in bits and bytes through tinny smartphone earbuds, vinyl aficionados demand more: the rich, full, warm sound that only a wax cylinder can provide. These analogue crusaders cross all musical genres and styles, from classic rock to new pop. Fortunately, we’ve got gift ideas that will suit any of them.

The Beatles in Mono Box Set
For the first time in decades, all of the Fab Four’s mono albums are available on vinyl, sourced from the original analogue recordings (even the 2009 CD release of The Beatles in Mono was pulled from digital masters). This is the only way to hear the group as it sounded in the ’60s—the only way to hear the artists’ preferred versions of the songs that altered the rock landscape forever. The set includes nine single-LP albums, the two-LP White Album, and the three-LP Mono Masters compilation, recreations of the vintage packaging (gotta love the paper cutouts that come with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band), and a handsome new hardcover book that provides a detailed history of the mastering process.

Let It Be and Abbey Road, by The Beatles
The Beatles in Mono won’t net you everything the Fab Four produced—their last few albums were mastered in stereo. Fortunately, both Let It Be and Abbey Road are available in the same lovingly crafted reproductions.

1989, by Taylor Swift
The country superstar goes full-on pop on her new album, with bouncy beats inspired by the year of her birth (which explains the album’s title and makes us feel positively ancient). The old-school charms of hit single “Shake It Off” are perfectly suited for vinyl and the packaging includes fun surprises like a set of candid photos taken by the singer.

Cheek to Cheek, by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga
“That’s Why the Lady Is a Tramp,” sung with Lady Gaga, was one of the highlights of Tony Bennett’s album Duets II. Here the outrageous pop diva and the legendary crooner continue their partnership, this time at album length. They offer serious, straightforward takes on familiar jazz standards by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and more. It’s the kind of music that just seems more natural spinning out of a turntable rather than piping through earbuds.

Crosley Executive USB Turntable
Even the true vinyl snob has to admit that records aren’t exactly portable (at least, we’ve gotten a few weird looks when we try to set up our turntable on the subway). That’s where this nifty vinyl-to-mp3 converter comes in. It looks like an ordinary suitcase turntable, but when you hook it up to your computer, it converts songs straight to mp3 files, for easy loading on the smartphone of your choosing. Keep your audiophile cred and take your music along with you at the same time—it’s the best of both worlds.
