To be honest, I didn’t know the real story of Saint Patrick’s Day before reading this book! Luckily for us Patricia Pingry does a fabulous job of explaining the history of Saint Patrick’s Day in a clear way so that even a young reader will come away with a deeper understanding of the holiday and who Saint Patrick actually was. These books do have a bit of a religious bent; Pingry also writes about other Christian holidays like Easter.

Jack and the Leprechaun, by Ivan Robertson 
This brightly illustrated book stars some adorable mice. Jack the Mouse is invited to a St. Patrick’s Day party all the way in Ireland. Jack learns about Liam the Leprechaun, and how if you catch him he has to give them his pot of gold. (Think of how much cheese you can buy with a pot of gold!) With that tidbit of info, Jack is on the hunt for Liam. Jack even learns a little bit of Gaelic along the way (the oldest language in Ireland!).
