Youngest Sibs Rule! 5 Books for the Baby of the Family

Ramona the Pest
As far as birth order goes, the youngest child has a bit of a … reputation. In researching this post I discovered that there is actually something called “youngest child syndrome” which doesn’t exactly have the best connotations. (Think: spoiled, dependent, etc.) Youngest children sometimes feel like they never get anything that hasn’t been passed on through the sibling ranks; from hand-me-downs from older siblings, to undivided parent attention. This is a loaded role! (And as an only child myself, I have limited personal experience with the position.) But, on the other hand, think of all the upsides for babies of the family, less pressure, lots of love and attention from everyone, and cool older siblings to guide you on your way. Sounds like a good deal to me! In this spirit, here’s a great list of books, from picture to middle-grade, that are perfect for the youngest child in your life.

It’s sweet and refreshing to read a story about an older brother who is SUPER excited to have a little brother. (Especially considering that there are plenty of stories about reluctant older siblings!) Little Critter is dreaming up all of the fun things he can do with his younger sibling, from riding bikes to fighting bullies. Hopefully little brother, who can’t walk yet, can keep up!

Always giving her older exasperated sister Beezus a run for her money, Ramona makes being the youngest look like a whole lot of fun. In this book, you get both the older and younger sibling perspective.
