5 Spooky YA Graphic Novels for Your Halloween
October’s here, and brings with it one of my favorite times of year—Halloween! Admittedly, it’s not because of the dressing up or the candy, but the chill outside and the horror movies on my TV, the possibility for something truly scary to happen. And graphic novels and comics are a perfect medium for horror, combining terrifying art with equally terrifying stories. The below books top our list of the scariest graphic novels around, perfect for this wicked and witchy season.

Wytches, Vol. 1, by Scott Snyder and Jock
When Sailor Rook and her family move into an idyllic New Hampshire town, the most important things Sailor hopes to focus on are fitting in at a new high school and escaping the family tragedy she moved away from. But the woods have other plans, and the witches in this comic book are far from what you’d expect. The artwork in this comic is exceptionally chilling and frightening, and it’s honestly the most unsettling on this list. There’s only one volume, but for horror fans, that’ll be more than enough for some serious scares.

Morning Glories, by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma
If X-Men met Stranger Things an elite prep school, then that’d be an on the nose comparison for Morning Glories. Set in an private school where things aren’t as they seem, including students, teachers, and the headmistress, it follows several teens through the course of discovering not only their powers, but the reasons they were brought to the school in the first place — and what sinister secrets connect them to it. The first volume alone has plenty of twists and turns, and while there aren’t terrifying monsters in this series, the people are actually much, much worse (especially the Headmistress). I absolutely devoured all ten volumes of this one!

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack
I only briefly remember growing up watching the old school Sabrina TV show, and this series is definitely different—and darker—than I remember. On her 16th birthday, Sabrina has to make a deadly choice: to complete the ritual that will make her a full witch, or lose her mortal boyfriend, Harvey. Throw in Madame Satan, Halloweeny happenings, and some seriously unsettling art, and this isn’t the old school Sabrina—which is a really, really fun thing.

We Can Never Go Home by Matthew Rosenberg
Another ‘teens with powers,’ setting, yet in this one everything that could go horribly wrong does (think Heathers if Veronica and JD had superpowers). Popular girl Madison and outcast Duncan only have one thing in common, and that’s the strange, otherworldly powers they possess. After a terrible incident forces them to go on the run, they find themselves caught up fleeing cops, crooks, and each other. It’s dark and terrifying and a beautifully vivid graphic novel, and the art is absolutely gorgeous and chilling.

Part The Craft, part Mean Girls, this series is chilling and fun in equal measures (and the title is my absolute favorite.) Kate Leth has written some of my favorite comics, including Lumberjanes, and Spell on Wheels is just as fun and creepy. The art from Levens and Louise is saturated and spooky and perfectly captures the tone of the book. When three witches have their powers messed with and magic artifacts stolen, they embark on a supernatural road trip to get them back. The series is still continuing, so once you’ve devoured this volume, there’s more to come!
