One More Day till Insurgent! Here’s Why We’ll Be First in Line
For the uninitiated, the Divergent series is a YA bestseller turned film franchise that follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior (played by Shailene Woodley) through a dystopian Chicago, where all of its inhabitants are separated into factions based on their personalities. It’s part epic action sequences, part swoony romance, and all incredibly inspiring. Basically, if you haven’t read the Divergent series yet, you should probably fix that. And you should probably do so ASAP, as the second film in the franchise, Insurgent, is finally hitting theaters tomorrow. We are SO EXCITED, and here’s why.

Because Insurgent will probably be even better than the first movie. Whether you loved the Divergent adaptation or not, this one is going to be better. For starters, Insurgent the book doesn’t suffer from any sort of sophomore slump. If anything, it’s even more action-packed, with a broader array of characters and heart-racing situations. The first film did lots of the work of setting up the romance, and that’s great news for the sequel: since Tris and Four (played by Theo James) have already updated their relationship status, Insurgent can get straight to business with the whole revolution thing. And if the behind-the-scenes videos are any indication, that’s exactly what it does.
And let’s not forget: the budget this time around has been increased by $at least 25 million, which means we can expect killer action sequences, effects, and world-building. While the first movie was all about the setup, this one is about exploring the world, venturing away from Dauntless and into the other factions, and telling the story of a revolution.
Because the actors can seriously act. I’m not going to harp on about how Theo James is so distractingly handsome there’s a real possibility you won’t even notice what’s happening in the movie. Other people have already done that for me. Instead, let’s get down to the important bits: this film is made up of some serious YA-film-adaption royalty.

YA movie darling Shailene Woodley (of, in case you’ve been living under a bookshelf The Fault in Our Stars and The Spectacular Now fame) leads the cast. Her onscreen love interest is none other than Theo “Hotness” James, who has previously appeared in Your Wildest Dreams. The two are joined by The Fault in Our Stars‘ Ansel Elgort and The Spectacular Now‘s Miles Teller. As if this teen (or teen-ish) dream team weren’t enough, note that the movie also features Octavia Spencer, Kate Winslet, and Naomi Watts, just to add that touch of class.
Because we want to support female-led action movies. Women make up over half of the population, so it only makes sense that more action movies starring females are popping up all the time. Unfortunately, female-centric action flicks are still rare enough that we notice them. It took Hollywood a while to get our memo and start delivering great female-led movies, so we certainly don’t want them to stop. If we want to keep seeing actresses like Woodley and Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson get action hero roles, we have to show our support at the box office.

Because Insurgent author Veronica Roth is a fan of the adaption. After concerns were expressed that the Insurgent movie would be vastly different from the book we know and love, the series author herself took to the Internet to calm our nerves. “Guys, Insurgent is great—and fun to watch,” said Roth on her Tumblr. “It is a tense, action-packed adventure of a movie. At certain points, my muscles were so clenched I felt like I had just done a series of push-ups.”
Roth goes on to acknowledge some changes from the source material, but notes this is all to serve Tris’s larger story. “Insurgent, the book, has a complicated plot—a lot of moving parts, a lot of ups and downs. That sort of thing can work in a book, but if it’s translated directly to the screen, it makes for a messy, confusing movie,” explained Roth. “The changes that were made streamline the story so it makes sense for this new format; in other words, they work.”
And, in other words, you should probably be excited for this movie, too.
