Why do we do and say the things we do and say? The Brain: Journey Through the Universe Inside Your Head introduces students to the fascinating world of the human brain and its effect on behavior. Readers learn about the main anatomy and functions of the brain while discovering the brain’s role in learning, memory, communication, and emotions. Kids also read about new technologies being used to research the brain in its various states of performance while being introduced to the effects of sleep, alcohol, and exercise on our most complex organ.

Combining hands-on activities with neuroscience, anatomy, and psychology, The Brain includes projects such as building a 3-D brain model and testing how the brain adapts to a new situation. The Brain integrates a digital learning component by providing links to primary sources, videos, and other relevant websites. Additional materials include a glossary, timeline, and a list of current reference works. The Brain is a unique opportunity to connect behavior, physiology, and the outside world in one amazing place—your head!

This title meets Common Core State Standards for literacy in science and technology; Guided Reading Levels and Lexile measurements indicate grade level and text complexity.

In this addition to the Inquire and Investigate series, Mooney provides a thorough discussion of the brain’s physiology and its role with regard to the senses, memory, language, and more. Comics from Casteel follow a group of students as they learn about the brain (in one sequence, a girl mistakes a mop for a monster, triggering a fear response from her amygdala; when she realizes the mop means having to clean up the lab, it triggers another one: “Threat confirmed! Keep running!”). Sidebars offer descriptions of jobs that involve the brain, links to online resources, and questions for discussion; ideas for experiments and activities appear throughout. It’s an extensive introduction to the brain’s capability and function, with just enough humor and interactivity to keep readers engaged. Ages 12–15. (July)

". . .The book is written to the reader and I would use this book for a supplement if required to use a textbook. If I was not required to use a textbook, I would use this book for secondary classes. This book would be good to use with students that struggle with reading and content."

    Booklist
"Like other titles in the Inquire and Investigate series, this book focuses on a high-interest topic in a cutting-edge field to reinforce young people’s understanding of the scientific method . . . an appealing and age-appropriate STEM resource."

    Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
This is much more than a book on the brain. It will be useful to teachers in biology, science, health, and anatomy. Students will find it very readable with easily understood analogies, such as the analogy describing the cerebral cortex as being like the frosting on a cake. There are cartoons on almost every two-page spread, making it visually inviting. New topics are creatively introduced and the sidebars add great reading interest, such as the one discussing amnesia. There are “vocab lab” sidebars introducing new words in which one is encouraged to practice using the new words with friends in real life situations. A timeline at the book’s beginning illustrates how we have slowly gained understanding of this amazing organ. Structure and function is important in biology and it is applied throughout the book. Directional terms are used, such as “posterior” and “superior.” There are brainteasers and QR codes that expand the book’s information and enjoyment. These QR codes link to videos of brain dominance, nerve signals, and many others. There are activities to enhance the understanding of some concepts, such as neural transition. Investigating your own body’s reaction to the illusion of a phantom limb will amaze the reader. From the types of memories to how headaches happen, this book packs more than one would think and will be referenced often. The glossary is extensive. This book will inspire science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) interest and serve as brain candy to the reader. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell; Ages 12 up.
