Textbook Rentals FAQ
How do I return my rental at the end of my rental period?
- Log in to your "My Account/Rental Management" page and click on "Manage Textbook Rentals" to print your free UPS return shipping label and packing slip. Record the tracking number provided on the shipping label.
- Place the packing slip, rental textbook(s), and any associated materials, such as CD-ROM, that accompanied your rental, in a box or sturdy mailer. Failure to include your packing slip will result in delayed processing and may cause you to incur late fee charges.
- Seal and affix your UPS shipping label on the outside of the package.
- Drop off your package at any UPS location. NOTE: Please do NOT drop-off your books at the Post Office and do not return your rental books to a Barnes & Noble retail store location.
Can I return my rental book to a Barnes & Noble retail store at the end of my rental period?
Currently, we do not accept in-store returns for textbooks rented online.
Where can I find my rental due date?
We have listed the due date for each textbook you rent on your Manage Textbook Rentals page under Active Rentals.
Can I extend my rental period or purchase my rental?
You have the option to extend your rental for 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, or 125 days. You can also keep your book by converting your rental into a purchase. Just visit your Manage Textbook Rentals page, in the "My Account" section of the site. If you choose to purchase your rental materials at the end of your rental period, your purchase will be a final sale. You will not receive a refund if you attempt to return a rental(s) that has been previously purchased by you.
Why was I charged other fees?
When you return your book, we check it out to make sure the next student can use it. If we judge the book to be no longer suitable for use, we will charge you for the replacement of the book, and it will remain the property of Barnes & Noble.com. Unusable books are ones with excessive highlighting or writing, missing pages, and/or damaged spines or covers. In addition, failure to return any associated materials that accompanied the rental textbook, such as CD-ROM, will result in extra charges to your credit card on file.
If you don't return your book on time, we will automatically add a 15-day extension to your rental. If after that 15 day period you have still not returned the book to us, we will convert your rental into a purchase by charging you the difference.
What is the return policy on rentals?
We have a generous, 21-day, any-reason return policy. Just return the book, and as long as we receive it by day 21 in the same condition as when you purchased it, we'll give you a full refund (minus shipping). Please note, however, if you choose to purchase your rental at the end of your rental period, your purchase will be a final sale. You will not receive a refund if you attempt to return rental(s) that have been previously purchased by you.
What happens if I return non-rental books/items with my rental return?
Barnesandnoble.com will contact you, at the default email address stored in your Account, to ask you what you would like for us to do with the non-rental books/items. If you would like to get your non-rental items back, you will need to reply to the email and will be responsible for shipping charges. If you do not respond to the email within 30 days, we will assume that you do not want the item(s), and you will not be refunded and the item will not be returned to you.
