Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, SJ is a Jesuit and Bible scholar of international fame. He was the archbishop of Milan from 1980 to 2002 and was made a cardinal in 1983. He has written more than forty books and has championed a revival of the ancient practice of lectio divina, or spiritual reading of Scripture, using it as a pastoral tool in his archdiocese and in his books. Martini has served as rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and continues his work today as a Bible scholar for the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Jerusalem.
