Ronald Argo was born in Alabama. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1968 with a degree in Journalism, and soon after went to Vietnam. After seven years writing for newspapers, he returned to university for masters degrees at San Diego State University and the University of Arizona in Tucson. His tour in Vietnam, 1970-71, spent in III and IV Corps as an army journalist, made for the genesis for this novel which otherwise could never have been as flavorful and true to place, time and events. He is the recipient of Sigma Delta Chi's journalism award for investigative reporting for a series on animal overpopulation in Southern California. Argo is the author of three other novels, including THE COURAGE TO KILL, THE SUM OF HIS WORTH and BABY LOVE. He lives with his wife in San Diego, where he is at work on another novel.

Acclaimed as one of the most important novels of the Vietnam War, YEAR OF THE MONKEY takes us not only into the savage jungles where death waits in every paddyfield, but into the apocalyptic world of political corruption, where friendship and betrayal become unavoidable, where murder and love are common as body counts. It is the gripping story of two American soldiers trapped in a sinister web of cold-blooded murder during the shattering Tet Offensive of 1968.
In the poisoned soul of Saigon, Russ Payne is an army journalist partying his nights away when a wild grunt named Willingham is lobbed into his life like a grenade. Willingham, the lone survivor of a Special Forces squad, has been reassigned, inexplicably, to Payne's cushy rear unit. Suddenly Payne's fragile peace is shattered when he's forced to spy on his new friend as part of a secret CIA investigation. On a mind-bending odyssey into the depths of the war-torn jungle, he follows Willingham in his bloody quest to avenge the massacre of his former unit--and discovers a hell of his own.
Cutting through an apocalyptic jungle of intrigue, Payne falls in love with a woman who welcomes him into the fold of a Viet Cong camp, witnesses the death of his childhood friend, discovers the horrific meaning of attrition...and ultimately leads to him committing a crime beyond redemption.
In stunning scenes of combat and intrigue, we glean as in no other novel or movie the patch-quilt nature of the Vietnamese people and the murderous deceit of sinister body count politics.
In the year of the monkey, Payne will come to understand the terrible consequences of following orders--and of ignoring them.

"If you tossed Ron Argo's novel onto the accumulated pile of books about the Vietnam war, it would land among those on top ... and remain there. Fifty years from now this book could well serve as one of the more comprehensive testaments in American history." -- The San Diego Union

"Ron Argo's extraordinary first novel of the brutalizing Vietnam conflict elevates him instantly to the front ranks of American war novelists--Crane, Dos Passos, Mailer, and James Jones. He captures the entire panorama of that treacherous, corrupting war: the bureaucrat5ic, face-saving officers; the jaded soldiers in cushy rear support positions; the die-hard boonies reeking of cordite and jungle; the ambivalent Vietnamese civilians of the cities and rice paddies; and the relentlessly perseverin

"Year of the Monkey is a novel about the war in Vietnam, yes, but it goes further than that. It is a superb adventure story, a moving, human novel about Vietnamese and Americans alike whose lives were forever changed by the war. In is scope and its honesty, it may well be the From Here to Eternity of the Vietnam generation." -- Robert Houston, author of THE NATION THIEF and THE FOURTH CODEX
