Overview

Use inquiry to promote equity and transform your school’s educational environment!

Using cultural proficiency as a lens, the authors guide practitioners through the process of gathering and analyzing data to meet the needs of historically underserved students. This book outlines a critical evaluation process and provides rubrics to examine why some students are not being educated to their full potential. With a CD-ROM of tables and spreadsheets for data entry, the book show educators how to:

  • Encourage discussions about educational equity
  • Create a realistic picture of a school's cultural and economic diversity
  • Initiate authentic systemic change
  • Effectively respond to NCLB mandates

About the Author

Randall B. Lindsey is emeritus professor at California State University, Los Angeles and has a practice centered on educational consulting and issues related to equity and access. Prior to higher education faculty roles, he served as a junior and senior high school history teacher, a district office administrator for school desegregation, and executive director of a non-profit corporation. All of his experiences have been in working with diverse populations and his area of study is the behavior of white people in multicultural settings. It is his belief and experience that too often white people are observers of multicultural issues rather than personally involved with them. He works with colleagues to design and implement programs for and with schools, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations to provide access and achievement. He and his wife and frequent co-author, Delores, are enjoying this phase of life as grandparents, as educators, and in support of just causes that extend the promises of democracy throughout society in authentic ways.

Cynthia L. Jew, Ph.D., is a Professor at California Lutheran University where she serves as Chair and Program Director of the Counselor Education Department. Dr. Jew teaches courses in Resiliency, School Systems and the foundational course in Cultural Proficiency for candidates receiving their Masters in Counselor Education. Dr. Jew also consults using the Cultural Proficiency model in the Educational Leadership department. Dr. Jew serves as a student support consultant to a public charter school. She received her Ph.D in School Psychology from the University of Denver and her primary area of research is developing Culturally aware Counselors and Advocates in school and college environments. She is a coauthor of the 2008 Corwin publication, Culturally Proficient Inquiry: A Lens for Identifying and Examining Educational Gaps. She is also the author of the Resiliency Skills and Abilities Scale.

Using the lens of Cultural Proficiency, Dr. Jew prepares school and college counselors. She is a single mother of two adopted daughters from China. Kiera provides the "test" of whether we are living into the vision of Cultural Proficiency; Jordyn, who uses Cochlear Implants, provides the reason for doing this Cultural Proficiencywork. They are teachers, leaders and the "soul" of the community into which we all hope to grow.
