Originally published in England in 1986, Riddell, a prizewinning children's author/illustrator of children's books, has completely redone the illustrations of his charming first book. Jim is a young child who is about to go to sleep when he is disturbed by a large Cookie-Monsterish creature who introduces himself as Mr. Underbed and asks to join Jim in his bed. But as the night goes on, and Jim tries to get himself comfortable, more and more creatures join him from drawers and under chairs and all over the room. They slowly fill up Jim's bed, so that there is no room left for him—in fact, Jim's mother comes in the next morning to find him curled up asleep on the floor. In keeping with such deliciously ridiculous names—such as Bumble, the middle drawer dog and Grimble, Grumble and Groan the toy trunk triplets, each creature is drawn with a Seuss like slant to bears, chicks, and elephants. K-Gr 2 Beginning with Mr. Underbed, Jim discovers a host of cheerful, baggy-looking monsters residing in his bedroom, all of whom want to sleep in his bed. Jim decides to sleep under the bed. There is not much here. Although children may find the pictures amusing, Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Dial, 1968) and Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (Harper, 1963) are preferable. This first writing effort by Riddell seems lacking in plot and thematic content, and the brightly-colored watercolors include some garish shades and unappealing combinations of colors. Ronald A.
