The Manager's Craft: Exercising Control, Building Commitment, Sustaining Productivity
Managing people is never any one thing. Consultants regularly put forward faddish designs for managing people but seldom deal with the real complexity of working through people to get the job done. Dr. Bassett critically reviews the many approaches to "motivating people" and concludes that there is no magic formula. The manager must somehow effectively exercise control through a blend of good communication, effective standard setting and sound personnel policies. He/she must elicit commitment by creating a culture of high work standards in which people feel empowered and respected, and, ultimately, must organize work effectively. An extensive and complex body of knowledge and practice that constitutes the Manager's Craft must be acquired and applied to achieve these objectives.
