While in prison in Utah with fellow Mormons, John Nicholson got to know Rugder Clawson, who was the companion of Joseph Standing when the latter was murdered in Georgia. Nicholson interviewed Clawson about the event and penned this lively account, which includes a list of Mormon "prisoners of conscience" in prison at the same time.

Also included is a description of life in a Utah prison of the late 19th century.
