About the Author

Gord Summer began his life’s journey in Europe as a farmer’s son 60 years go. That experience led him to acquire education as a master agriculturalist. However, for 27 years his occupational interest has been in developing the hotel industry which was the source of success in his life until 2005. Four years prior to being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003, Gord had a strong suspicion that he might be developing symptoms of Parkinson's. His father had Parkinson’s so he had a firsthand knowledge about symptoms his father experienced that he too was beginning to experience.

Keeping fit has always been important to Gord. He enjoys today prestigious black belt credential. Gord has enjoyed being a martial arts instructor since 1998. He felt it was important to prepare himself and - out of defiance - started scuba diving in 2006. In 2008 he was awarded the title of master diver.

Gord's stubbornness and defiance of Parkinson's Disease gave him the courage to coach his grandson in martial arts. He is very proud that his grandson achieved his black belt in 2010 at 12 years of age. As is evident from this interview, his persistent and determined personality plays an important role in helping Gord managing this disease.
