The Pueblo Surrender: A Covert Action by the National Security Agency
How the NSA manipulated the U.S. Navy, Pentagon, White House, Congress, tricked the North Koreans, Russians and Chinese, almost caused a war, and concealed the truth for over 40 years.

On January 23, 1968, the North Koreans seized the U.S.S. Pueblo. The incident sent shock waves around the world-almost started a war-and has been the focus of controversy and contradiction ever since. Investigative reporter Robert Liston uncovered startling information to support a remarkable conclusion: The Pueblo was purposely surrendered in a covert mission conceived and carried out by the National Security Agency, a super-secret branch of U.S. intelligence.

Liston produces documented evidence to show that the Pueblo, controlled by NSA operatives, was used as bait to draw the Soviet Union and Red Chinese into an NSA trap-an operation that enabled the NSA to break the Soviet system of codes, put the KGB on the defensive for years, and stop a possible war between the Soviets and Chinese.

For the first time, author Liston brings to light a true story of powers usurped by the NSA. Along with its eavesdropping activities, the NSA is the exclusive codebreaking and codemaking arm of the US government. It thus exclusively controls information made available to those in the White House, Pentagon, halls of Congress and society. No one but a few people in the NSA knows how accurate and complete that information is. At least in the Pueblo Incident the information was highly inaccurate.

Control of information enables the NSA to influence the knowledge, thoughts, beliefs and actions of others in government and society.

The NSA has usurped an awesome grant of power, threatening our Constitutional government. We need to understand how it works and find methods to cope with its abuse.

About the Author

Newspaperman, magazine journalist, author of over 80 non-fiction books and novels, Robert A. Liston has been called a professional writer, someone who earns his living writing on a wide-variety of subjects.

With this output, it may come as a surprise that he invested 7 years in writing and publishing his masterwork, The Pueblo Surrender: A Covert Action by the National Security Agency. Discovering what really happened to the ill-fated American vessel was difficult enough, but the hard part was finding a publisher. Ultimately, five literary agents and 35 editors rejected it, quite unread. In fact, Liston’s novel The Brandywine Game, based on information gained in his Pueblo research, was published prior to Pueblo. This led one informant to remark, “How strange you can publish a novel but not the truth.”

Pueblo found both a hard cover and paperback publisher, but was all but ignored by major newspapers and book reviewers. Many of the reviews were scurrilous attacks on the author, offering no factual challenge to the book. Over the years, The Pueblo Surrender has begun to be accepted and quoted, and the NSA itself has come under attack for its eavesdropping operations.

Liston was born in Youngstown, Ohio and raised in nearby Portage County, where he graduated from Hiram College. The college library archives his books and papers. At Hiram he met Jean Altman, is wife of over 60 years. They have daughters, granddaughters and a great-granddaughter. Bob and Jean have lived in many places in the US and abroad, finally settling in Santa Barbara, California.
