About the Author

David A. Carter is best known for his pop-up books for both children and adults. His Bugs series has sold over six million copies. He lives in Auburn, California. James Diazhas created hundreds of pop-ups and won numerous awards for his paper engineering, including the Gold Three-Dimensional Illustration Award. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The authors succinctly introduce significant works of sculpture from antiquity to the present day, then profile 10 prominent modern sculptors including Rodin, Brancusi, Duchamp, Noguchi, and Calder. Carter and Diaz explore central themes of and concepts behind various works of art, amid substantial information about the artists and their work. This book is both an exploration of modern sculpture and six cardboard sculptures to build. Sculpture is defined as art that is three-dimensional. Modern sculpture is defined as sculpture made since 1900, a particularly creative and innovative period. Humans have been making sculpture for a very long time. One of the first illustrations in the book is an ivory carving of a mammoth made approximately 35,000 BC. What follows is a brief history of sculpture in the ancient world and classical Greek and Roman sculpture. This overview continues with commentary and images of sculpture from Medieval Europe, the Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical western art. Ten modern sculptors are featured as the time line continues. Those artists include Auguste Rodin, considered by some to be the best sculptor of all time, Constantin Brancusi, Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Naum Gabo, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi and Lygia Clark. Each spread for the artist consists of a full-page bio and a reproduction of their work. There is a glossary, related links and bibliography. The most fun, however, are the six punch out sculptures for the reader to build. Die-cut in heavy cardboard, the pieces are numbered with instructions of construction. Gr 7 Up—Here's a title that is what it's about—a book about sculpture that is also a sculptural work in itself. The pages of the book are set directly into the left-hand side, and the text opens with a brief history of sculpture from its prehistoric beginnings, then discusses 10 modern sculptors, including Auguste Rodin, Louise Nevelson, Pablo Picasso, and Alexander Calder. The right-hand side contains an envelope filled with 10 sets of cardboard die-cut pieces that readers may use, guided by accompanying instructions, to assemble six "planned" sculptures designed by the authors; there are also additional pieces for readers' individual creations. While the reading level is geared to older middle school students and higher, those without knowledge of sculpture may find some of the reading rough going, as there are some sophisticated concepts here. Some definitions in context seem confusing, and not all terms are defined in the glossary. The explanation of the term monochromatic is also misleading, as it's defined as "all black or all white." The authors helpfully mention where works by each artist may be seen, but they neglect to include some of the artwork that they cite. The title's packaging also does it a disservice. The unremovable book and inclusion of the punch-out pieces preclude general purchase for public or school libraries. Another problem is the deceptive appearance of the book: the cover, the format, and even the perky title set in a large font suggest the work is skewed to a much younger audience. In a school setting, this title would work best as a purchase for individual art classes as a reference resource, provided that the cardboard sculptures will be disassembled, placed back in the envelope, and reused by other budding student-artists.—Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY

A brief history of modern sculpture, packaged with sturdy cardboard sheets of die-cut pieces that can be assembled into abstract…assemblages.Alas, with this well-meaning work, Carter and Diaz prove that they should stick to the paper engineering for which they are both justly renowned. They start with a patchwork survey of Old World and African sculpture from prehistory to the turn of the 20th century and then introduce 10 "modern" sculptors (all of whom have been dead 25 years or more) in biographical sketches. The text throughout is weighted down with name-check references to other dead artists and art movements of the past along with mentions of important works that are not among the ones illustrated. The punch-out pieces in the accompanying box can be assembled into six sophisticated original abstracts without scissors or glue, but they have no evident stylistic connections to the work of the 10 profiled artists. Though the models come with explicit instructions for preferred assembly, the authors do include a few unlabeled pieces that can be slotted in where desired. But a dismissive cover claim that the models are similar to the preliminary "maquettes" that practicing sculptors sometimes make isn't likely to provide young experimenters with much in the way of motivation. A poorly conceived art box that's more likely to stifle any creative impulse than nurture it. (bibliography) (Informational novelty. 10-13)
