Nonfiction science books can often be pretty dry reading. Facts followed by facts. Not this time. Cartoon aliens help explain the science of energy in a fun and quirky way. Take the time to examine the pictures in this book. Alien humor runs rampant and this comedic format allows for the "spoonful's" of facts to go down so much easier with this "sugar" humor. I found myself learning how to discern energy and matter (a spaceship has more mass than an alien, even though both are made of matter), and how potential energy can become kinetic energy. Oh, I also learned that in space no one can hear you burp. The reader learns how energy can never be destroyed, but that it can only be changed. This fact is proven when the aliens make a fire to roast weenies. There is even a section about conserving energy and how powerful the sun is. Even an alien needs to use a good SPF sunscreen. Speckled throughout the book are vocabulary words and their definitions in a short, concise form. At the end of the book you can also review these words in a glossary. The author has added internet sites and other books that may interest the reader for a follow up information jaunt. Also included is an index for quick searches. I completely enjoyed this book and felt like I really learned many useful facts in a way that had me laughing and sharing the cartoons with others. Readers will definitely enjoy learning science facts with the help of these crazy aliens. Reviewer: Toni Jourdan
