Davies's goal is to raise ``theoretical issues in understanding the forms that prison writing takes, its content and how the prison experience might be read.'' From Boethius to Genet, the Holocaust to modern prisoners of conscience and much besides, he examines the themes of prison literature (especially as ``countertexts'' that try to map routes out of dominant insitutions) and certain kinds of narratives/stories (writing on death row, for example). Finally, he calls into question ``institutional violence as the normal way for conducting social affairs.'' While Davies's important exploration is often thought-provoking or moving, and his knowledge impressive, many readers will find that the literary-critical/sociological jargon accompanying his focus on ``the production of text within the experience of prison and violent closure'' obscures his message.-- Richard Kuczkowski, Dominican Coll., Blauvelt, N.Y.
