Keeping the focus on one youngster in a specific country provides a solid introduction without overwhelming readers with complex regional variations in practices and beliefs. The series is gorgeously illustrated with high-quality color photographs. All of the volumes show the children engaged in a variety of activities at home, at school, with friends and family, and practicing their religion. Words and phrases that are unique to the faith appear in bold font and are defined at greater length in the glossary. A “Notes for parents and teachers” section briefly describes common practices and provides information on such topics as the origins of the religion and how many people worldwide are believers.

This book is about Ariceli and her family in Mexico. She is one of Esperanta's forty-nine grandchildren. Her father is a fencer who rides around farms on horseback to check and mend broken fences. Ariceli's grandmother grows much of her own the food but sometimes buys things in the village. Ariceli goes with her. The family is Christian and belongs to the Roman Catholic Church. Every Sunday they go to church to worship God in a mass. Mexican children take classes on Saturday morning to learn about Jesus and the teachings of the church. The classes are in their village, San Antonio, which was named after Saint Anthony. Each year the village holds a fiesta for Saint Anthony that lasts for thirteen days. There is a procession, like a parade, that goes to the church where a mass is held. There is dancing and a carnival. On the last day of the fiesta, Ariceli and other children take their first Holy Communion. The girls dress in wedding gowns and the boys in white suits. Ariceli can now take communion at each mass and she and her grandmother pray and thank God. The book is part of a series about "Families and their Faiths." On each page of the book is a full color photograph of either the people and their activities or a symbol from the church. The book is good for teaching about Mexican customs in the Christian religion. At the back of the book is a section called "Notes for parents and teachers." These pages explain very simply the basic beliefs of the Christian religion and what is happening in the photographs. There is also a glossary. Reviewer: Christine Cassello
