Gr 7 Up-The purpose of these titles is to introduce American students to the European Union (EU). Each book includes an introduction by the EU ambassador and a generic chapter on the organization's history, purposes, and structure, followed by one on the particular country's EU interactions. Unfortunately, the volumes don't do justice to either the EU or the nations belonging to it. The material is poorly written and often difficult to follow. There are numerous errors and major omissions, and the authors assume more knowledge from readers than is likely to exist. The maps omit geographical features, making it hard to comprehend the chapters on "the landscape." Each book concludes with a calendar of festivals; recipes; and suggestions for projects, all of which require substantial research (with no guidance as to where to start). Jean F. Blashfield's Germany (2003); Ann Heinrichs's Luxembourg (2005); and Don Nardo's France (2000, all Children's Press) are more thorough titles for this audience.-Ann W. Young people today are more aware than ever of the interconnectedness of our world. Thus, they also understand the importance of learning about other cultures. This resource book takes an in-depth look at all aspects of French life. Sanna and Indovino manage to squeeze a vast amount of information into a very slim volume. Large, full color photographs help to make the prospect of reading this book less intimidating. The authors plunge right in and tackle the difficult issues facing the European Union today, starting off with immigration, discrimination and the recession. Using a fictional Jean-Pierre to illustrate the tale, readers learn a lot from this text-dense book about what is happening in modern France. French history is covered from prehistoric all the way to modern times. A survey of France's culture, environmental challenges, the economy, religious history, and government is also included. Although most of the information seems to be correct, the book would benefit from careful editing. Some statements, such as one that claims France ceded control of the northern two-thirds of the nation to Germany in the 1918 armistice and that Germany retained possession of it until 1942 when it took over the rest of France is confusing, if not completely false. "Quick fact" blocks of information are sprinkled throughout the text if the reader needs some fast information to fill out a book report. Also contains a table of contents, glossary and index.
