Library educators are encouraged by the authors to “encounter the learner as an individual with personal interests, preferences, and motivations, and a uniquely human set of cognitive capacities.” The elements discussed are the importance of authenticity and autonomy, empathy and the science of learning, relationships, cultivating a growth mindset, and technology. Among the goals are to discover what truly interests a student researcher who may need to narrow an assignment to a manageable level; to learn the use of keywords in searches for resources and thus develop the ability to research independently of the librarian; to cultivate a trusting relationship; and to decide what, if any, technology to use. All of this information expands the customary reference interview. Some of the more specific examples of technology will cause a chapter to become dated as new products are introduced. Although the target audience seems to be college and university students, current librarians who take the time to read through the extensive research provided in this text will give more consideration to what it is like to be a learner today, and perhaps will find new approaches to integrate into their work with patrons of all ages.
