The 39 Steps
Scottish expatriate Richard Hannay, who recently returned from Rhodesia, South Africa is both the protagonist and narrator. Any ideas he might have had of a pleasant experience since arriving are dashed when a stranger who appears to be a well traveled American by the name of Franklin Scudder is found murdered in Hannay's flat. Before his death, Scudder claims to be a contract spy and following a ring of German spies called the Black Stone who are trying to steal British plans for the outbreak of war. In time, Hannay becomes convinced that the First Sea Lord is an imposter and a spy. Pursued by the police and German spies, Hannay discovers the true meaning of the thirty-nine steps. When war breaks out, Hannay is rewarded with a captain's commission in the British army.

About the Author

John Buchan (1st Baron Tweedsmuir) was born in Scotland on August 26, 1875 and passed away in Montreal on February 26, 1940. He attended Glasgow and Oxford Universities. While in Africa, he contributed to reconstruction subsequent to the Boer War. During the first world war, he was the Director of Information in the British government. He authored a twenty-four volume history of the war. In addition to being an author of thrilling and historical novels, he also had a public life as Governor-General of Canada. His novel, The 39 Steps was made into a noir movie in 1935 by genius Alfred Hitchcock and starred Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. Both the book and movie are considered classics in terms of intrigue and suspense.
