An updated and expanded Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (Macmillan, 1990) forms the basis of this new encyclopedia, which is designed for high school students and is written at ninth and tenth grade reading levels. The nearly three hundred entries focus on people, places, and politics as well as major topics helpful to the understanding of the Holocaust that are likely to be part of school assignments, such as anti-Semitism, the American press and its coverage of the Holocaust, and the war criminal trials. The set is attractively designed with a border of barbed wire at the top of the pages; clearly separated entries; numerous photos; illustrations and maps; and large margins for key points, definitions, and brief descriptions of the illustrations. There are sidebars containing excerpts from documents and diaries, poetry, and further explanations of significant events. Embedded cross-references appear within each entry with suggested resources such as books, videos, and Web sites at the end. Other helpful features include a complete table of contents, and a time line that places the Holocaust in the context of world events appears at the beginning of each volume. Similarly, the comprehensive index appears in each volume. The set concludes with an eleven-page glossary, a selection of primary sources—both Nazi and Jewish—and a subject-arranged list of resources in the final volume. A brief introduction looks at the causes of the Holocaust, focusing on such concepts as the growth in government powers, the development of a vast and impersonal bureaucracy, the importance of science and technology with their increasing separation from ethics and morality, and anti-Semitism. Thissection might have benefited from cross-references to further develop answers to why the Holocaust happened. This encyclopedia will serve students quite well, increasing their knowledge of the horrific events. In comparison with Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (Facts on File, 2000/VOYA June 2001), which includes thought-provoking essays on various topics and is aimed at a more general audience, Learning contains longer entries. This four-volume set explores the Holocaust as symptomatic of modern society itself and not of some earlier, uncivilized world. It is based in part on an published more than a decade ago and revised here for a secondary school audience. About 300 entries cover topics that include the countries most involved in and affected by the Holocaust; the primary concentration and extermination camps in which millions of Jews and others were incarcerated and murdered; the major political, ethical and moral themes that arise from these events; and victims, survivors, perpetrators, and rescuers. Arranged alphabetically, entries range from a few paragraphs to several pages. and are cross-referenced. Also included is a timeline placing the Holocaust in the context of world events.
