Clever Lily. Each time she asks an aunt, uncle, or parent to do something with her, they are a little bit busy but they suggest she can do it by herself. And she can. Blue Kangaroo looks on appreciatively and doesn't say anything, but he thinks things like "How clever she is!" Playing to a child's belief that stuffed animals talk and think, Clark continues Lily's doings, such as her making a tea party outside for her stuffed friends, rescuing them from the rain and putting them on the radiator to dry, and "reading" a book to herself. When she volunteers to read her little brother to sleep, her father is very proud and so is Blue Kangaroo. In a neat twist, Blue Kangaroo realizes that Lily has left one animal out in the rain so he goes outside and drags it in through the "cat flap," and Lily figures out what he's done in the morning. "You are clever, Blue Kangaroo!" says Lily. "What would I do without you? Blue Kangaroo didn't know, so he said nothing." It is a refrain repeated throughout the book that extols the virtue of self-reliance, while it celebrates special friendships and those who can appreciate doing it yourself. Bright watercolors, with plenty of patterned surfaces, a summery setting, and a charmingly rat-nosed kangaroo, make this fun to look at. It is the next installment of Lily and Blue Kangaroo's adventures told in other books such as I Love You Blue Kangaroo! and Where Are You, Blue Kangaroo? 2003 (orig. 2002), Doubleday, Ages 3 to 6.

PreS-Gr 1-Lily and her trusty friend are back for a fourth adventure, and this time the topic is self-reliance. Feeling bored, the girl asks her toy animal what they should do. "But Blue Kangaroo didn't know, so he said nothing." Lily then tries to talk various family members into amusing her, but they're all busy with projects, so she's left to her own devices. Each interaction, however, inspires her to try something out on her own. To her surprise and delight, she discovers that she can draw dinosaurs, have a pretend tea party, and even read by herself. Lily's final achievement for the day is rescuing her stuffed toys from a rainstorm-and Blue Kangaroo shows his resourcefulness, too, by dragging forgotten Tiny Teddy inside. Lily appreciates this initiative just as her family has acknowledged her abilities. As always, Clark's watercolor illustrations are bright and appealing. They show a cozy, idealized domestic setting, both indoors and out-the perfect place for a preschooler to develop a bit of independence while still feeling safe and secure. Clark conveys a can-do message clearly, though the plot lacks the punch of the earlier stories. Most readers won't mind, though.
