K-Gr 3–Each book introduces a child who practices the faith featured. Keeping the focus on one youngster in a specific country provides a solid introduction without overwhelming readers with complex regional variations in practices and beliefs. The series is gorgeously illustrated with high-quality color photographs. All of the volumes show the children engaged in a variety of activities at home, at school, with friends and family, and practicing their religion. Words and phrases that are unique to the faith appear in bold font and are defined at greater length in the glossary. A “Notes for parents and teachers” section briefly describes common practices and provides information on such topics as the origins of the religion and how many people worldwide are believers.

This is a nice little introduction to a Jewish family living in Israel. It is narrated by the grandfather, who explains several holidays, customs, and traditions. There are three sons in this family, Amichai, who is about five, Asher, who is probably nine or ten, and Reuven, who will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah at the Shabbat (Sabbath) services this coming Saturday and is therefore thirteen. There is no plot, but Asher is the focus of the documentary. In general, children's activities are very similar all over the world, and these three Israeli children are no different. They have friends, go to school, do their homework, and play sports. When they go for walks, they see, smell, and hear many things that are probably common in Jerusalem but would be very different from what American children see. This family is probably Modern Orthodox in outlook, so the sight of a Hasidic family is notable for them as well as for American readers. The photographs are fantastic. Not only do they portray the children, the grandfather, and various members of their family and congregation, but they capture little details of everyday life like the pictures on the walls, the vegetables and fruits at the market, and the fringes of falling beneath the shirts and jackets of the men.
