Five children receive invitations to train in the Magical Arts of Wizardry at Oakcrest Academy in the land of Windy Hollows. Ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old, the children personify archetypes of western childhood, including a jock, a gamer, a science geek, a fashion-obsessed girly-girl, and a goofy clown. When the five arrive at the academy, they are surprised by the absence of any teacher. Inevitably, the children accidentally turn one of their group into a frog, and find themselves conquering a series of magical challenges in order to return their friend to human form before the clock runs out. At the end of the volume is a create-your-own adventure where the reader is given a series of panels and stickers with images of the characters on them, then invited to place the characters in the panels and write their own dialogue. The illustrations draw from the Japanese manga style and are colored in jewel tones with more than their share of shadows. This graphic novel is created under the banner of JumpStart, an educational media franchise which develops online games, educational toys, and curriculum—and indeed, the plot reads like an online game. The similarities to another worldwide wizarding phenomenon (Harry Potter) are glaring. The transparency of this derivation acts as a kind of short-hand; rather than dwell on describing the circumstances of these children's unique calling, readers are thrown straight into the adventure. Unfortunately, all of these elements culminate in a half-hearted, contrived effect. The characters are stereotypes, the challenges are overcome too easily, and no real danger is ever encountered. The lack of originality, awkward dialogue, the impracticality of stickers in a book collectively owned, and cheap binding combine to make this a completely unnecessary book for virtually all libraries.
