Joey McDermet has been sent to spend his Christmas break in Newfoundland with his Aunt Corinne, after his mother has an accident. But Aunt Corinne is acting very strangely since the recent death of her husband. She seems to have lost interest in food, and spends a lot of time at the edge of the cliff, overlooking the ocean where her husband drowned. And then there is the matter of the mysterious Tucker, a young boy who seems to disappear quite readily and whom only Joey is able to see. Joey delves deeper into the mystery, and eventually discovers supernatural evil is behind his aunt's problems. This is an adequate mystery, and somewhat scary at times. Character development is rather weak, making it a little hard to care much about the fate of the protagonists. The climax ought to be horrifying, but is so peculiar that it becomes almost laughable. Fans of mysteries and books about the supernatural may enjoy this book, but it is far from great literature. 2003, Kids Can Press, Ages 9 to 12.

Falcone has a background as a private investigator, a teacher, and a screenwriter-how's that for something a little different? This novel is basically a ghost story, and the main character is an appealing 13-year-old named Joey, whose single mom sends him to a little village in Newfoundland to spend Christmas with his aunt. When Joey gets there, he finds his aunt seriously disturbed, mentally ill really, grief-stricken after the death of her husband, who drowned. The woman who had always loved him and been interested in him now is cold, angry, and withdrawn. Joey is hungry and upset, and as Christmas approaches life only becomes more frightening. The setting (including a lighthouse), the cold, and the powerful, threatening ocean all add to the suspense.
