The United States experiences approximately 1,250 tornadoes a year. For many living outside Tornado Alley, this statistic is just a number, albeit a staggering one; however, for those who live in one of the seven states that make up Tornado Alley, almost a third of this number is an experienced reality. In this “Disaster Dossiers” series book, readers will learn all about tornadoes and their deadly, destructive impact. The information is divided into six sections that include a balanced amount of text and visual appeal. Four sections are assigned to recount the catastrophes of four specific tornadoes, including the tornadoes that hit Oklahoma in 2013, the deadliest tornado that hit Bangladesh in 1989, and the Bridge Creek-Moore tornado, that holds the strongest wind record. The remaining sections, sandwiched in the middle, give an overview of tornadoes throughout history and a variety of survival stories. Each section designated to a specific tornado offers a timeline of events that follow the progression from initial warnings to touchdown to aftermath destruction. While each section has a main focus, each one also contributes to the reader’s general knowledge by describing a tornado’s origin and destructive ability, methods of survival and emergency services available, the means through which storm chasers spread tornado news, and the ways in which aid is provided both physically and financially. The final section concludes with a list of several summative lessons, including the unpredictably of tornadoes, the importance of heeding warnings and having a plan, as well as the need to learn more. Photographs spread throughout provide authentic visuals of tornado destruction and several maps show the location and path of specific tornadoes, as well as the states that comprise Tornado Alley.
