Ten bugs are battling to be the grossest. A Giant Mesquite Bug, a San Jose Scale, and an Azalea Caterpillar are just a few of the bugs mentioned in this fiction meets nonfiction children’s book. Each page focuses on one of the disgusting bugs: what it looks like, what its offense is, its use in nature, its survival and its level of grossness (using a gross-o-meter vs. manners meter). At the end of the book are three pages to reference the life cycle of the bugs, a map of where the bugs can be located, and a glossary with terms. Montgomery’s book will appeal to readers who love bugs, namely the more disgusting type. She balances each page with facts (information and real-life photos) and fiction giving each bug an anthropomorphic attitude. McWilliam takes the anthropomorphic approach further with his comical illustrations. The final page has an author and artist’s note that explains their process.
