Life and the Sudden Death of Salt Peter
There comes a time when prudent and meaningful planning and preparation can become excessive and evolve into an impediment much like an anchor, keeping one in place! Almost always, adventure requires a submission to uncertainty and abandon of the pursuit of omniscience, taking at least, to a significant degree that leaps into the unknown. Such was the case of Salt Peter and her skipper for the duration of a year in the Pacific. Originally pursuing a circumnavigation, the journey took the author and his vessel on a seven thousand mile voyage to Hawaii, Tonga, Fiji and finally to New Caledonia, where Salt Peter met her end. It was a journey of discovery, both physically and spiritually, with a range of experience to last a lifetime. I invite you to join me on this year-long adventure and experience with me an honest, uncomplicated and enriching interaction with the seemingly endless ocean and volatile sky and discover with me the rewards of taking a chance.

About the Author

Drawn to the great outdoors for most of my life, I waited until my retirement in 2006 to become familiar with the sailing world. A total novice, I took basic sailing lessons and purchased my first boat. In 2010, at age 66, I single handed to Hawaii and attempted to circumnavigate the globe in June 2013. With limited skills and knowledge of the real world of sailing, I set off from Marina Del Ray on a journey that was to take about three years. I was motivated but was also quite aware of my lack of know-how and the limitations that advancing age would place on a single hander. This was not the “dream of a lifetime” as many suggested. It came out of a desire to discover myself and achieve a peace with personal issues. There was an emptiness in my life that continues to be there but it is by choice. Like many, I have been an armchair adventurer, living in a world of imagination. That comes easily to me. But all my life I have pursued mini-adventures, always seeking to push the envelope. Over the years, I connected with mountaineering and rock climbing, but never to an advanced degree. I got my pilot license and logged my hours with no particular goals. My sailing life, short that it is, likewise took me to a place of disappointment. But my decision to head out into the big blue Pacific was one I do not regret. It was a year of eye-opening experiences and spiritual fulfillment and I would not trade it for anything. People talk about the “bucket list”, mine is a large bucket with a list that goes on and on!
