Salt of the Sea, Stories told by the Fishermen of Point Judith
The salt of the Sea is about men and a few women who are considered good ole boys that made their living on the sea. They were from Rhode Island and they fished out of Point Judith, Rhode Island. This port is called Galilee and it played a major role in New England’s fishing Industry.
These salts were around when the port was established back in the 1940’s and they are few and far between now. Cindy, the author is a daughter of one of those fishermen. She recognized these men were passing on and taking the stories with them so she wrote this book.
She recorded stories told by the fishermen who grew up and fished out of the port. They tell how they got into fishing and what it was like to fish on fifty-foot trawlers without radar, loran’s or radio communication. The way they tell their stories in their own words and voices brings to life what it meant to be working far beyond the horizon with only their skill, courage and a little luck to bring them safely home again.
